Post-Operative Instructions

LOCAL ANESTHETIC (numbing medicine)

If your child received local anesthetic, the lips, cheeks, and tongue may stay numb for 2–4 hours (sometimes longer).

What is normal?

  •   Tingling or “fat” feeling in the lip or cheek
  •   Drooling
  •   Difficulty speaking clearly

👀 Very Important – Prevent Biting:  While numb, children may chew or suck on their lip, cheek, or tongue without realizing it.  Please watch your child closely until feeling returns.

🥤Eating & Drinking:   Wait until numbness is gone before eating.  If your child is very hungry, offer soft foods and watch carefully.  Avoid hot foods or drinks while numb.

😬 If your child bites their lip or cheek:  Swelling or a white/yellow area can appear later. This can look scary but usually heals on its own in several days.  Offer cold compresses,  keep the area clean, and give children’s pain medicine as directed, if needed.

NITROUS OXIDE (laughing gas)

If your child received nitrous oxide (laughing gas) to help them relax, we gave oxygen afterward to clear it from their system. Most children feel back to normal within a few minutes.

What is normal?  Your child might have:

  •  Mild sleepiness
  •  Slight dizziness
  •  A little nausea

🥤Eating & Drinking:  If your child feels fine, you can return to normal foods.

 🛌Activity:  Normal activities are okay.

ORAL SEDATION

If your child received medication by mouth to help them stay relaxed and comfortable for dental treatment today, sleepiness can last for several hours.  Because the medicine may still affect balance, judgment, and coordination, close supervision is required.

What is normal?  Your child may:

  •   Be sleepy or nap more than usual
  •   Seem unsteady when walking
  •   Have mild nausea
  •   Be a little emotional or irritable
  •   A slight fever

🥤 Eating & Drinking:   Start with clear liquids.  If tolerated, progress to soft foods, then a regular diet.  If nausea occurs, wait before offering more food.

🛌 Activity:  No school today. Quiet indoor activity only today.  No sports, playgrounds, bikes, swimming, or climbing.  Your child may return to normal tomorrow.

🚨 Call us or seek medical care if you notice:

  •  Trouble waking your child
  •  Difficulty breathing
  •  Snoring that seems unusual or loud
  •  Persistent vomiting
  •  Fever
  •  Any behavior that worries you
  •  If you feel your child needs urgent medical attention, call 911.
